‘If it is not proven, I will continue my work’: Bimol Akoijam to legally challenge JNU action
Inner Manipur MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam has said he will legally challenge the action taken against him by Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) over sexual harassment allegations, while urging the media to give greater attention to the humanitarian crisis in Manipur.
Akoijam made the statement after returning to Imphal from New Delhi on October 16, where a large number of supporters gathered at Imphal International Airport to welcome him.
Speaking to reporters, the MP said his lawyers were preparing to file a legal challenge within the next day or two. He said he would approach the matter cautiously, citing concerns over the state of institutions.
“My lawyers are preparing because we have to be very cautious. Institutions are so fragile now,” he said, adding that he would continue to cooperate with the investigation while pursuing legal remedies.
Referring to the action taken against him by JNU, Akoijam said he would resume his work if the decision was not legally justified.
“If they have thrown me out, it is well and good if they have proved it right. If it is not proven, I will continue to do my work,” he said.
The MP also appealed to his supporters and the public to remain calm and ensure that the controversy did not lead to further tension in Manipur. He said his fight was for justice and against injustice, and urged people to maintain peace.
Akoijam called on the media to shift greater attention towards the plight of thousands of internally displaced persons (IDPs) who continue to live in relief camps amid the ongoing crisis in the state.
He highlighted the hardships faced by displaced families, continued lawlessness, concerns surrounding buffer zones and the disruption of students’ education, saying these issues required sustained public attention.
“I don’t think my pain is anything greater than the pain of these people,” he said, referring to the suffering of displaced families.
The MP appeared before investigators at Vasant Kunj North Police Station in New Delhi on Thursday night after being summoned in connection with the sexual harassment case linked to JNU.
The allegations are under investigation, and the matter remains subject to the ongoing legal process.
