Khongjom Day marked under tight security in Manipur; boycott call has limited impact

Khongjom Day, commemorating the martyrs of the 1891 Anglo-Manipur War, was observed across Manipur on April 23 amid heightened security, with authorities ensuring a largely peaceful event despite a boycott call by the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI).

The observance featured ceremonial wreath laying, guard of honour, gun salute and traditional rituals, with tributes paid to war hero Paona Brajabashi.

Security was stepped up across key locations, particularly at the Khongjom War Memorial Complex and along major routes, including the Imphal–Thoubal road, following COCOMI’s call to boycott BJP leaders and stage protests. However, only limited demonstrations were reported, mainly in parts of Langthabal, and officials said the programme concluded without major incident.

Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, addressing the gathering, described the day as a symbol of courage, sacrifice and patriotism, urging citizens to uphold unity, rule of law and communal harmony.

Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh also paid homage to the martyrs and appealed for peace. Referring to the recent Tronglaobi incident, he expressed grief and said the government is engaging with affected families and civil society groups to ensure justice.

He acknowledged public anger but stressed that protests should not lead to disruption or division, and thanked citizens for maintaining relative calm during the observance.

The main state-level ceremony at the Khongjom War Memorial Complex was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Losii Dikho, along with ministers, MLAs and senior civil and security officials.

Observed annually on April 23, Khongjom Day remains one of Manipur’s most significant historical commemorations, though this year’s event also reflected the prevailing social and political tensions in the state.
