Kuki civilian allegedly shot dead by armed men in Manipur's Kangpokpi, village body demands probe

A 44-year-old Kuki civilian was allegedly shot dead by armed men while collecting wild bamboo shoots in Manipur's Kangpokpi district on Tuesday, October 20, prompting local organisations to demand an impartial investigation and enhanced security for civilians in the area.

The deceased, identified as Paolenmung Thangeo, was a resident of P. Muolding village. According to statements issued by the P. Muolding Village Authority and the P. Muolding Youth Club, the incident took place around 7 am when Thangeo and another villager, Laldenga of Molhoi village, had ventured into a forest to collect bamboo shoots for their livelihood.

The Village Authority alleged that the attackers were Tangkhul/Liangmei Kacha Naga militants associated with the NSCN-IM and ZUF(K). These allegations have not been independently verified.

Thangeo succumbed to his injuries, while his companion reportedly escaped. The deceased is survived by his wife, Kholneichong Thangeo, and their three children.

The killing has raised fresh concerns over civilian safety in the Leimakhong area. The Village Authority also referred to the recent abduction and killing of Hemjang Haokip of Khunkho Kuki village, citing it as another instance of violence against Kuki-Zo civilians.

Condemning the latest incident, the Village Authority said repeated attacks had created an atmosphere of fear and insecurity among residents, particularly those dependent on forest produce for their daily sustenance.

It urged the Central and Manipur governments, along with the concerned security agencies, to initiate an immediate and impartial investigation, identify those responsible and ensure their prosecution in accordance with the law.

The authority also called for stronger security arrangements in Leimakhong and adjoining areas, warning that failure to take effective measures could further erode public confidence and deepen insecurity among residents.

The P. Muolding Youth Club separately condemned the killing, describing it as a violation of the right to life, safety and human dignity. It demanded that the perpetrators be identified and brought to justice, while appealing to all concerned parties to exercise restraint and refrain from violence and intimidation.

The youth organisation also expressed condolences to the bereaved family, saying the killing had caused grief among the victim's relatives and the wider community.

Both organisations stressed that civilians must be able to pursue their livelihoods without fear of violence and called for immediate steps to prevent further loss of life.
