Manipur: 45 displaced villagers shifted to Senapati relief centre after village attacks

Forty-five villagers displaced from Tapon Namguang (Upper) village in Kangpokpi district were brought to Senapati district headquarters on Thursday evening, September 3, following an attack in which several houses in the area were burnt.

The villagers were initially taken to Senapati Police Station and later shifted to a temporary relief centre at Taphou Liangmai. The centre has been set up by district civil society organisations in coordination with the Senapati district administration.

Of the 45 displaced villagers evacuated by Senapati Police and the Assam Rifles, 23, including elderly people, women and children, have been accommodated at the temporary relief centre. The remaining villagers are staying with relatives around Senapati district headquarters.

Ng Chunthan, spokesperson for the Naga People's Organisation (NPO), said the 45 villagers were evacuated from Tapon Namguang (Upper) with the assistance of the district police and Assam Rifles.

He said the district administration had assured the displaced people of all possible support. Chunthan also appealed to the authorities, particularly security forces, to evacuate villagers who remain stranded in Tapon Namsan (Lower), including some people who were injured during the firing.

According to the NPO, three Liangmai Naga villages along the Imphal-Tamenglong Road under T Waichong subdivision in Kangpokpi district were attacked in the early hours of September 1. More than 30 residential houses and a church were allegedly burnt during the incident.

The district civil society organisations have urged the authorities to ensure the safety and evacuation of those still in the affected areas and provide necessary assistance to the displaced families.
