Manipur Chief Minister begins Ukhrul outreach, villagers flag water and road issues

Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh began a road journey to Ukhrul district on April 17 as part of ongoing outreach efforts aimed at improving coordination with remote communities and addressing key infrastructure concerns.

His first stop was Shangkai village along the Imphal–Ukhrul road, where he interacted with residents. Kuki women in the village raised concerns over the lack of reliable drinking water and sought immediate intervention. Singh assured them that the issue would be taken up on priority and addressed after his return to Imphal.

The Chief Minister, accompanied by MLAs and senior officials, was later welcomed at Thawai Kuki village, where a large number of residents gathered. During discussions, villagers highlighted problems related to road connectivity, water supply and access to healthcare services. Singh reiterated the government’s commitment to improving basic infrastructure and said the concerns raised would be prioritised.

In a statement shared on social media, Singh said the government remains focused on ensuring the delivery of essential services to all parts of the state. He added that efforts would continue to ensure equitable development across villages.

The Ukhrul visit follows similar road journeys to Jiribam and Senapati districts via key national highways, part of a broader initiative to strengthen engagement at the grassroots level.

Officials said Singh will halt at Ramva to review progress on a National Highway project before proceeding to Ukhrul. He is scheduled to hold meetings with Tangkhul community leaders and district officials, including the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police, at the DRDA conference hall.

The visit also includes inspection of an ongoing rigid pavement construction project and the inauguration of the Shirui Heritage Project at Shirui village. Singh and his team are expected to conclude the visit after a lunch meeting at Shirui.
