Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh on Wednesday condemned the recent drone bombing incident at Kangchup Foothill in Imphal West near the 5th Manipur Rifles (MR) camp, labeling it "unfortunate." He assured that police have launched an investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Speaking to reporters, Chief Minister Singh expressed concern over the attack, stating, "In recent months, violence in the region had subsided significantly. However, this drone bombing incident is deeply regrettable. The police are actively investigating to initiate appropriate legal action against those responsible."
The attack occurred at approximately 9:30 PM on January 14, targeting a temporary Manipur Rifles camp located in Kangchup Foothill, a strategic area near Kangpokpi district. Two bombs, reportedly dropped by drones suspected to be operated by Kuki militants, detonated near a bunker within the camp. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
This marks the second aerial drone attack in the region in recent months, following a similar incident on September 1, 2024, at Koutruk in Imphal West. After delivering the explosives, the drones reportedly retreated, leaving security forces scrambling to secure the area.
Police, along with forensic experts, recovered remnants of the bombs and related devices from the scene for analysis. Lamshang police have registered a case and are actively pursuing leads to uncover the identities of those behind the attack.
