Manipur CM visits family of Delhi assault victim Chongtham Vikram, assures justice

Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on September 10 visited the residence of Chongtham Vikram Singh, the 54-year-old musician who died after being allegedly assaulted in Delhi on September 7, and met his bereaved family.

Khemchand Singh, accompanied by Thangmeiband MLA Khumukcham Joykishan Singh, visited the family's residence at Thangmeiband Lourungpurel Leikai in Imphal West.

The chief minister and the MLA expressed their condolences and shared the grief of Vikram's parents and other family members. They also interacted with the bereaved family and assured them of support.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, MLA Joykishan said all possible efforts would be made to ensure justice for Vikram.

He said various sections were extending support for swift action in view of the seriousness of the incident. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju has also urged the Delhi Police to file a charge sheet within eight days, he said.

"Justice for Vikram will surely be delivered. And we need action so that no northeastern people become victims of brutal killing or attack in mainland India," Joykishan said.

He added that Vikram's life could not be brought back, but steps must be taken to ensure that similar incidents involving people from the Northeast do not recur elsewhere in the country.

Vikram was allegedly assaulted in the early hours of September 7 outside his residence in Kilokari village in South Delhi after he objected to alleged disorderly conduct, shouting and public consumption of alcohol.

He later succumbed to injuries sustained in the assault.

Vikram was the son of retired veterinary doctor Chongtham Birendrakumar and renowned singer Chongtham Ongbi Kamala. He is survived by his wife, Chongtham Joshna.
