Manipur: COCOMI women’s wing condemns dismissal of MP Bimol Akoijam from JNU

The women’s wing of the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) has condemned the dismissal of Manipur MP Bimol Akoijam from his post as a professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), calling for a proper investigation into the allegations against him before any conclusion is reached.

Addressing a press conference at the COCOMI office, women’s wing co-convenor RK Tharaksana said reports about allegations levelled against Akoijam by some JNU students had emerged over the past few days.

She questioned the decision to dismiss him before the allegations were investigated through due legal process.

“If there is any crime, there should be a window period for investigation. It is questionable how far the allegations are possible or true. As such, directly dismissing him from his post as professor is very unfortunate and unacceptable,” Tharaksana said.

She also expressed surprise over a protest rally reportedly organised a few days ago by Manipur BJP president A Sharda, who is also a Rajya Sabha MP, demanding action against Akoijam. Tharaksana said it was too early to make such demands before the matter had been properly investigated.

“If Bimol is found guilty, we will also not support him. But just concluding without any proper investigation through a court of law is unacceptable,” she said.

Tharaksana further said Akoijam was the only person who had consistently raised the issue of Manipur on the floor of Parliament while reflecting the sentiments of the people of the state.

The allegations against Akoijam and the circumstances surrounding his reported dismissal remain central to the controversy.
