Manipur: CRPF marathon in conflict-hit Kangpokpi promotes fitness, unity

More than 250 runners and sports enthusiasts participated in a 10-km marathon organised by the 94 Battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in Manipur’s Kangpokpi on September 9, in an initiative aimed at promoting fitness, sportsmanship and community participation.

Held at Brigadier Thomas Ground under the themes of Khelo India, Sports Authority of India (SAI) and SPANDAN (Sports for Peace And Development Across Nations), the event sought to use sports as a platform to encourage healthy living and foster unity among communities in the conflict-hit district.

The marathon was organised under the direction of the Inspector General of Police, Manipur-Nagaland Sector, and the guidance of the Commandant, 94 Battalion CRPF.

The race began at Brigadier Thomas Ground and proceeded along NH-2 towards Kalapahar before participants returned to the starting point. Drinking water was provided at four locations along the route.

The event was attended by Sadar Hills Autonomous District Council CEO James Doujapao Haokip, former Indian Super League footballer Boithang Haokip, Sadar Hills Football Academy founder Elminhao Kilong and senior CRPF officers, besides local ward representatives, sports club office-bearers and other dignitaries.

Addressing the gathering, Haokip congratulated the CRPF for organising the marathon and providing young people and sports enthusiasts with an opportunity to come together through a positive sporting initiative.

He said such events could encourage discipline, physical fitness and healthy lifestyles while strengthening community participation and unity. He also said the presence of prominent sportspersons and other guests could inspire aspiring athletes and encourage young people to pursue sports.

At the end of the race, the top three finishers were felicitated with cash prizes, medals and certificates.

L. Lunminlal Khongsai secured first place and received Rs 10,000, a gold medal and a certificate. Lamkhotinsei Kipgen finished second and received Rs 6,000, a silver medal and a certificate, while Lamginmang Vaiphei came third and received Rs 4,000, a bronze medal and a certificate.

Certificates were also presented to the top 50 finishers.

The CRPF said the successful conduct of the marathon reflected its commitment to promoting sports, physical fitness, community participation and healthy living through initiatives aligned with Khelo India, SAI and SPANDAN.

The event concluded with participants and members of the local community displaying enthusiasm and sporting spirit.
