Manipur Deputy Chief Minister calls for drug-free society at Chandmari Jubilee
Manipur Dy CM Nemcha Kipgen on April 28, called for a united community effort to build a drug-free and healthy society, while attending the 75th anniversary celebrations of Chandmari village in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district.
The Platinum Jubilee celebration (1951–2026), organised by the Chandmari Village Authority and its Jubilee Committee, marked a significant milestone in the village’s history, highlighting its legacy, unity and development over the decades.
Kipgen, who attended the event as the chief guest, unveiled the Jubilee monolith and released commemorative balloons as part of the celebrations. Thangkhoklen Kipgen, Chief of Khokheng, unveiled the foundation stone plaque, while Rev. J. Lunkim dedicated the structures.
A cultural highlight of the programme saw village chiefs, elders and church leaders ceremonially striking the traditional Dahpi (gong) 75 times, symbolising the village’s 75-year journey.
Addressing the gathering, the Deputy Chief Minister congratulated the people of Chandmari and described the milestone as a reflection of the community’s resilience and progress. She urged local institutions, including village chiefs, women’s groups and youth bodies, to collectively address the growing problem of drug abuse.
“The fight against drugs cannot be left to the government alone. Community participation is essential,” she said, calling for vigilance, awareness and social responsibility.
Kipgen stressed that a drug-free society is crucial for ensuring the safety and future of younger generations, and urged the community to use the Jubilee year as a turning point for collective action.
In a separate session held at the church hall, a commemorative souvenir documenting the village’s history and achievements was released by Pastor Ngullet Khongsai.
The Chandmari Village Authority also submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Chief Minister, seeking government support for upgrading the local primary school, improving road infrastructure and constructing a community hall.
The celebrations concluded with a community feast attended by villagers and dignitaries.
