Hundreds of runners from across India gathered in Ukhrul district to participate in an environmental awareness marathon aimed at protecting Manipur's endangered state bird, the Nongin.
The "Run for Nongin" marathon and companion "Trash Race" were organised as preliminary events for the upcoming 5th Shirui Lily Festival, drawing 273 participants from states including Manipur, Nagaland, Bihar, and Jammu & Kashmir.
Wede Tmero from Nagaland's Phek District claimed first place in the 11-kilometre marathon, which started at Phungreitang and concluded at Shirui Village. Ukhrul locals Thotngacheirin Hunphun Luiyi and Ringhorsem Muinao secured second and third positions.
The parallel "Trash Race" featured 116 participants who collected litter along a 1.3-kilometre route. Grace A Shatsang won by gathering over 11 kilograms of waste, highlighting the event's focus on environmental conservation.
"We need collective effort to preserve and protect the Nongin," said Gitla Laishram, District Forest Officer for Ukhrul, who flagged off both races. She emphasised reducing single-use plastics and protecting both the state bird and the Shirui Lily, Manipur's state flower.
The events were organised through a partnership between the 7 Sisters Foundation, the Manipur Forest Department, and the Manipur Olympic Association. Notable attendees included Ukhrul Deputy Commissioner Asish Das and several district officials.
A cleanliness drive at Mini Secretariat, Hamleikhong, involving district-level officers and staff from various departments, was also conducted as part of preparations for the Shirui Festival 2025.
