Manipur: Imagi Meira slams high court delay on highway PIL, demands clarity on free movement

Members of Imagi Meira have expressed strong dissatisfaction over repeated delays in the hearing of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking free movement along national highways in Manipur.

A delegation led by convenor Th Sujata, who is also the petitioner, voiced concern after the case—originally scheduled for hearing on March 30—was deferred to April 29. She questioned the prolonged uncertainty caused by repeated adjournments, asking how long the public would have to wait for clarity.

Sujata also raised concerns over statements by Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh regarding the reopening of highways, alleging that Meitei civilians still face safety risks and are unable to travel freely. She said the lack of a final court order has added to public confusion.

“We want proper clarity on whether highways are truly open for all and how safe they are for travel. National highways are meant for everyone, and all communities should have the right to move without fear,” she stated.

The PIL seeks free movement on key routes including NH-2, NH-37, and AH-1, removal of buffer zones, deployment of central forces, and strict action against groups blocking roads. It also calls for court-monitored oversight and interim measures such as escorted convoys.

Sujata cited recent incidents of movement restrictions, including reports of individuals being stopped while travelling to Churachandpur for a peace rally, underscoring the urgency of judicial intervention.
