Manipur: Incessant rains submerge Bailey bridges, villages cut off in Saikul

Days of relentless rainfall have left several villages in Manipur’s Saikul region cut off after swollen rivers submerged multiple Bailey bridges, crippling connectivity and daily life.

Key bridges at Chongjang–Songbem, T. Gamnom–K. Laitwi, Denglen–Molkon Bazar, Lhungtin–Mollen, Gallam–Somphung, and Gangpikon–Mollen were reported to be completely under water, leaving villagers stranded. These bridges are crucial arteries for the region, linking communities to markets, schools, and healthcare facilities.

The disruption has particularly affected school children, with hundreds unable to attend classes for several days. Farmers have also been unable to transport agricultural produce to markets, while patients requiring urgent medical care remain at high risk due to the isolation.

Community leaders voiced concern over the deteriorating situation, warning that if rains persist, the crisis could escalate further. They have appealed to the district administration and relevant authorities for urgent intervention, including relief support and a safety assessment of the affected bridges.

Though no casualties have been reported so far, the situation has raised alarm over potential disasters if water levels continue to rise unchecked. The ongoing monsoon season, villagers fear, could prolong their isolation unless immediate steps are taken.
