Amid relentless rainfall and severe waterlogging in Manipur, all patients and medical staff at the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) have been safely evacuated to nearby hospitals in Imphal.
Only the blood centre remains functional, operating on generator backup.
Dr. Surjit, Medical Officer at the JNIMS Blood Centre, confirmed that 400 units of blood are being transferred to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) for temporary storage. “The only surviving unit is the blood centre. We have 400 blood units as of now. There is no power supply, and we have been sustaining on generators.,” he said.
Furthermore, he shared that the authorities requested RIMS (Regional Institute of Medical Sciences) to store their blood stock temporarily.
"We requested our counterpart, RIMS (Regional Institute of Medical Sciences), to store our blood stock temporarily. Our blood stock is being shifted to RIMS Blood Centre. All the patients and medical staff have been shifted to nearby hospitals in Imphal," he informed.
Rescue teams from the Manipur Fire Service, Indian Army, NDRF, and SDRF worked tirelessly to evacuate not only patients but also stranded medical students and staff. They ensured that vital medical equipment and blood supplies were safely relocated.
No casualties have been reported so far, and coordinated efforts continue as the region grapples with the impact of extreme weather.
