Manipur: Kangpokpi observes Good Friday with prayers, mourning
Christians across Kangpokpi district on April 3 observed Good Friday with solemn prayers and deep mourning, commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.
A spirit of devotion marked the day as large numbers of believers gathered in churches and prayer halls from early morning. Special services were held between 11 am and 3 pm, traditionally believed to be the hours of Christ’s crucifixion, with worshippers offering silent prayers, reading scriptures and singing hymns reflecting themes of sacrifice, repentance and hope.
Major churches in Kangpokpi district headquarters, including Kangpokpi Christian Church, Kuki Baptist Convention Centre Church, Christian Revival Church and Kangpokpi Independent Baptist Church, witnessed significant participation.
Church leaders, in their sermons, highlighted the spiritual significance of the day, describing the crucifixion as the ultimate expression of love and sacrifice, and urged the faithful to practise compassion, forgiveness and humility.
Special prayers were also offered for those affected by the ongoing conflict in Manipur, following an appeal by the Committee on Tribal Unity, reflecting a sense of collective grief among the Kuki-Zo community.
Shops and establishments remained closed, while many families observed fasting and prayers at home, marking the day with quiet reflection.
Good Friday, observed by Christians worldwide, commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and precedes Easter Sunday, symbolising hope, resurrection and the triumph of faith.
