Manipur: Key constitutional changes take centre stage at 31st Kuki Inpi meet
A push for major constitutional reforms has emerged as the central focus of the 31st Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM) General Assembly, now underway at Hengbung village in Sadar Hills. The four-day gathering, which began on December 1, has drawn large numbers of delegates from Kuki-inhabited areas, signalling both the urgency of organisational restructuring and the wider political significance of the meet in Manipur.
The Assembly is set to conclude on December 4 with the KIM General Election 2025, where new office-bearers for the apex Kuki body will be chosen.
Delegates registered on the opening day before the inaugural service commenced. KUGAA and KNT led the opening worship, after which KIM Speaker Thensei Kipgen took charge of proceedings. General Secretary Kae Gangte introduced delegates, setting the tone for a participatory session. Thangminlen Kipgen, President of Kuki Inpi Sadar Hills, stressed unity and collective responsibility in his address. Rev Letkhotong Haokip offered the inaugural prayer.
Day two featured key symbolic events — the hoisting of the KIM flag, unveiling of the Assembly monolith and release of the KIM souvenir. President Ch Ajang Khongsai hoisted the flag and unveiled the monolith, while Saitu MLA Haokholet Kipgen released the souvenir. Both items were dedicated by Dr T Lunkim.
Crucial deliberations then shifted to proposed amendments to the KIM Constitution and recommendations from the Executive. These discussions are expected to shape long-term structural and administrative reforms within KIM, with implications for community governance across Manipur.
The third day will continue agenda-based discussions during Assembly Session III, followed by the Jangna Dopna programme, a culturally significant segment. A mass prayer service for the Kuki community is slated for the evening.
The concluding day will centre on the KIM General Election 2025, after which the Assembly is expected to issue its formal declaration, bringing the 31st session to a close.
