Manipur: Khongban Sanurok attack victim’s relative demands CM Khemchand’s resignation, withdrawal of central forces
A relative of a victim of the recent attack at Khongban Sanurok in Manipur has demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh and Member of Parliament Adhikarimayum Sharda Devi, alleging that they have failed to restore peace and ensure civilian safety in the state. She has also called for the withdrawal of central security forces from the affected areas and the deployment of more Manipur Police personnel.
Rosa, cousin of Ksh. Sushil, made the demands during a press conference held at Uyumpok Mamang Leikai on Tuesday morning. Local residents and members of the victim's family attended the press conference to condemn the attack reported a day earlier.
Reacting to the incident, Rosa questioned the government's handling of the security situation in Manipur, which has been affected by ethnic violence since May 2023. She said that despite assurances of restoring normalcy, several areas continue to face security concerns, with the region among those severely affected by the prolonged crisis.
Rosa also expressed concern over the recent attack on civilians at Nongshum, which she alleged was carried out by Kuki militants. She questioned the government's ability to prevent repeated attacks and protect civilians despite its claims of an improvement in the security situation.
Calling for immediate intervention, she urged the authorities to take decisive steps to prevent further attacks and ensure the safety of residents in violence-affected areas.
Her demand for the withdrawal of central forces and a greater role for Manipur Police comes amid continuing concerns over civilian security in the state. She maintained that the government must take concrete measures to prevent further loss of life and restore public confidence in the security arrangements.
