The president of Kuki Students’ Organisation (KSO) in Delhi & NCR, Paojakhup Guite has addressed the misrepresentation of his remarks concerning the Shirui Lily Festival. His recent comments, widely shared, have been misconstrued.
Guite stressed that his words were not directed against the cultural event but were meant to draw attention to security issues and the promotion of peace in the region.
In his explanation, Guite stated, "My statement was a cautious warning intended to prevent escalation and save lives. It was misinterpreted as inflammatory, whereas it was truly driven by a deep concern for public safety." He sought to correct the misperception that his comments were antagonistic towards the festival, highlighting instead the priority of ensuring safety amid ongoing tensions in Manipur.
Guite expressed concerns regarding the potential misuse of the festival as a means to breach designated buffer zones. These zones serve as critical barriers separating conflicting regions and maintaining order. He emphasised the importance of these zones in safeguarding communities and preventing disputes, urging both authorities and the public to remain vigilant.
Guite cautioned, "The unchecked movement of these armed factions in vulnerable areas is a serious risk to all communities, especially to women and children. Overlooking these threats could jeopardise efforts to restore stability." His statement calls for immediate attention to the security dangers presented by these armed groups.
Guite assured that there is no organised opposition from Kuki civil society organisations against the Shirui Lily Festival. However, he insisted that public gatherings should be managed with care to avoid heightening tensions. Referring to the Supreme Court of India’s observations, he noted the breakdown of law and order in Manipur and the ensuing erosion of public trust in state institutions.
Clarifying his stance, Guite firmly denied any connections with village volunteer groups or militias. He remains committed to peaceful and democratic protest methods, stating, "I have always advocated for peaceful protest and dialogue. My comments were not a call to arms, but a reminder of the delicate balance needed to prevent further violence."
Guite concluded by reaffirming his respect for India’s democratic principles. He articulated his belief that buffer zones should not be perceived as divisive but as essential tools for reducing tension and safeguarding communities. His dedication to unity and the protection of lives was evident as he declared, "As a peace-loving citizen of this great nation, I stand for unity and the protection of all lives. Buffer zones are not symbols of division but mechanisms to reduce tension and protect all communities."
