The Lecturers’ Association Manipur (LAM) 2018 Batch, unanimously resolved to continue its ongoing pen-down strike, which began on July 21, until August 2, citing the prolonged delay in the regularisation of their services.
The strike has disrupted the academic atmosphere in the state, with the government allegedly failing to reach any understanding or agreement with the protesting group.
During a press conference, LAM 2018 Batch secretary Malemnganbi said the strike was launched to push for the completion of the long-pending regularisation process and the release of regular salaries. She said they had given the government a deadline of July 26, but no concrete steps were taken.
Highlighting that the association comprises 603 lecturers who play a crucial role in maintaining quality education in higher secondary schools, Malemnganbi termed the government’s inaction as “unfortunate and condemnable.”
She expressed regret over the inconvenience caused to students but said the hardship faced by the lecturers had compelled them to intensify their agitation.
She recalled that 603 lecturers were appointed on a contractual basis in 2019, and a cabinet decision on January 8, 2022, approved their regularisation with assurances of regular pay starting April 2023.
However, salaries have yet to be released due to the incomplete regularisation process, she said.
