Manipur Lok Sabha Elections 2024: First phase of voting begins, over 15 lakh to cast vote

The democratic fervor gripped Manipur today as the first phase of General Elections to the 17th Lok Sabha commenced across the state. With polling stations buzzing with activity, citizens embarked on the crucial task of choosing their representatives on April 19.

Today's polling marks the beginning of the electoral journey for both the Inner Manipur and Outer Manipur (ST) Parliamentary Constituencies. Across Manipur, a total of 15,44,652 voters, comprising 7,41,849 males, 8,02,557 females, and 246 transgender individuals, are poised to exercise their franchise. The democratic exercise unfolds across 32 Assembly Segments for Inner Manipur and 15 Assembly Segments for Outer Manipur (ST) Parliamentary Constituencies.

In a significant step towards inclusivity and gender representation, 645 polling stations will be entirely managed by women personnel, underscoring the commitment to diversity in the electoral process. Moreover, two polling stations will be exclusively managed by Persons with Disabilities (PwD) personnel, ensuring accessibility for all voters. Additionally, arrangements have been meticulously laid out for Internally Displaced Voters across various districts, with the establishment of 85 special polling stations to facilitate their participation.

A total of 10 candidates, with 6 contending for Inner Manipur and 4 for Outer Manipur (ST) Parliamentary Constituencies, are vying for victory in this inaugural phase. As the electoral machinery swings into action, stringent measures are in place to monitor the process closely. Webcasting and videography arrangements are operational in 1256 polling stations, enhancing transparency and accountability. Furthermore, the deployment of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) and Micro Observers in critical polling stations bolsters the integrity of the electoral process.
