Manipur: Outcry over Phailengmol killing; bodies still missing as condemnation mounts

As the 24-hour total shutdown imposed by the Committee on Tribal Unity commenced at midnight on April 13, a sea of Kuki-Zo people inundated National Highway 2 at daybreak protesting against the inhuman Phailengmol's killing, shooting of innocent Kuki-Zo labourers at Gamgiphai and the wilful disregard of the Model Code of Conduct by valley the people and the armed militia.

On  April 13, National Highway 2 became a stage for anguish and outrage as thousands of Kuki-Zo people flooded the streets, demanding justice for the killing. The 24-hour total shutdown organized by the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU), paralyzed normal life in the district, with businesses shuttered and vehicular movement halted.

The magnitude of the protest was unparalleled, with chants reverberating through the air: "Bihar Regiment Down, Down," "N Biren Singh, Shame, Shame," and "We demand NIA intervention." The voices of the Kuki-Zo, especially the resolute women, echoed a plea for recognition and action in the face of unspeakable atrocities.

The bodies of Lupheng and Lunkim, slained, remain elusive, denying their families the closure of a proper burial. CoTU's Media Cell Coordinator, Ng. Lun Kipgen condemned the horrific acts, labeling them as one of the darkest stains on human rights. He decried the Election Commission of India's silence and urged for intervention by the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

Kipgen's words carried the weight of a community in mourning. He questioned the jurisdiction of law enforcement in Phailengmol, highlighting systemic flaws that perpetuate injustice.

As the 24-hour shutdown draws to a close, the Kuki-Zo people refuse to relent until justice is served. The search for Lupheng and Lunkim's remains continues.

In solidarity, various organizations, including Kuki Inpi Manipur, ITLF, KSO Sadar Hills, and TYA Sadar Hills, have united in condemnation of the brutal acts committed against their brethren.
