Cultural activists and artists across Manipur paid rich tributes to noted exponent of Nata Sankirtana, Sougaijam Thanil Singh, on his third death anniversary, recalling his immense contribution to preserving and promoting the traditional art form.
The commemorative programme was held at Shri Shri Radhamandap Mandir in Yumnam Leikai, Imphal West, jointly organised by his family members and disciples.
The event was marked by floral tributes to his life-size portrait, followed by Sankirtana performances by renowned artists as a homage to the late maestro.
Speaking on the sidelines of the event, his son Sougaijam Bhogen highlighted the lifelong dedication and sacrifices made by his father in uplifting Manipuri art and culture. He reaffirmed his commitment to continue his father’s legacy by undertaking initiatives to preserve and promote Nata Sankirtana in the state.
Bhogen noted that beyond being a performer, Sougaijam Thanil Singh also played a significant role in cultural policymaking and was instrumental in securing recognition for Nata Sankirtana as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. He also authored five books on Sankirtana, which are part of academic curricula in institutions such as Manipur University of Culture, Assam University, and Visva-Bharati University.
Sangeet Natak Akademi Awardee Leimapokpam Lakpati Singh described him as a “true gem of Manipur,” remembering his unparalleled dedication to the development of Nata Sankirtana. He added that such remembrance events play a crucial role in inspiring younger generations to follow in his footsteps.
Sougaijam Thanil Singh was conferred the Padma Shri in 2005 for his distinguished contribution to Manipuri culture. Over the years, he choreographed and participated in numerous prestigious cultural events in India and abroad, including the Asian Games (1982), SAARC Traditional Festival of Drumming (1986), and international festivals in South Africa, the United States, and China.
