Manipur sets up pony reserves and grounds in all districts to preserve ponies

To promote Meitei Sagol or Manipuri Pony sustainably, various associations dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the Manipuri Pony have initiated the setup of pony reserves and polo grounds in every district of Manipur.

The Manipur Horse Riding and Polo Association, Manipur Equestrian Association, and Manipuri Pony Society have joined hands to begin the groundwork for the preservation of the Manipuri Pony.

Speaking to the media at the Manipuri Pony Breeding Farm in Lamphelpat, Imphal, Prof. Ch Priyoranjan, President of the Manipuri Pony Society, emphasized the cultural and historical significance of the Manipuri Pony in Manipuri society. However, with the population of this semi-feral animal reduced to around 1089, urgent action is needed to conserve this breed.

Priyoranjan outlined an action plan for conservation through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. Two committees have been formed—one focusing on setting up pony reserves and polo grounds, and the other on registration and financial aspects of conservation. The committees have begun identifying suitable locations for pony and polo grounds, alongside initiating the registration process for ponies.

The ultimate goal is to submit a comprehensive report to the Manipur Pony Conservation and Development Board, chaired by the state's Chief Minister. Priyoranjan highlighted the challenges faced by Manipuri ponies due to the loss of natural grazing habitats, rapid urbanization, and limited utility beyond polo and religious functions.

He stressed the need for pony reserves and polo grounds to support economically challenged pony owners and ensure the preservation of this unique breed. Priyoranjan also emphasized the importance of pony owners registering to access government-provided facilities and support.
