Manipur situation improved in 2025 due to decisive security action, government initiatives: Army Chief

Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi on January 13 said that the security situation in Manipur witnessed marked improvement during 2025 due to neutral, transparent and decisive actions by the security forces, complemented by proactive initiatives taken by the government.

Referring to the broader situation in the Northeast, General Dwivedi said sustained efforts by the armed forces and civil administration had helped restore a degree of normalcy in Manipur.

He pointed out that the peaceful conduct of the Durand Cup football tournament in the state reflected improved law and order and public confidence.

The Army Chief also highlighted the resumption of cultural festivals and community activities as significant indicators of stability returning to the region. Another key development, he said, was the renewal of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement with Kuki insurgent groups in September 2025, which contributed to reducing violence and creating space for dialogue.

General Dwivedi emphasised that the combined approach of firm security measures and inclusive governance initiatives remains crucial for sustaining peace and stability in Manipur and the wider Northeast.
