A 10-day vocational training programme aimed at helping Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) build sustainable livelihoods began on Wednesday at Kanggui Christian College in Kangpokpi district.
Spearheaded by the Kangpokpi District Administration in partnership with the Mustard Seed Foundation (MSF), the initiative seeks to equip 80 registered IDPs with practical skills in electrical installation, baking, food processing, and mushroom cultivation.
The programme is structured in three phases and will be conducted across Kangpokpi, Saikul, and Saitu to ensure broader access for displaced residents across the district.
Launching the initiative, Deputy Commissioner Mahesh Chaudhari, IAS, emphasised the importance of translating skills into long-term economic stability. He noted that the program is designed not just to offer training but to create pathways for employment, self-employment, and entrepreneurship.
“The goal is not just to train, but to empower,” Chaudhari said. He added that high-performing participants could be eligible for support through central schemes such as the Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (PMMY) and Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP).
Chaudhari encouraged trainees to take the sessions seriously, noting that the training could open doors to bank loans, job placements, and inclusion in future government initiatives.
District officials and representatives from MSF were present at the launch event, underscoring the collaborative nature of the project. Training is being conducted in both morning and evening sessions to accommodate participants' varying schedules.
The initiative is part of the broader effort to restore stability and promote self-reliance among those displaced by recent unrest in the region.
