To prevent the extinction of the rare Siroi Lily and Kombirei flowers, the Manipur government is set to initiate both laboratory and field studies. This announcement was made by Dr. T Brajakumar, Director of Environment and Climate Change, during the observance ceremony of the International Day of Biological Diversity held at the State Botanical Garden, Khongampat. The event was themed “Be Part of the Plan”.
The Siroi Lily recognized as the state flower of Manipur, and the Kombirei flower, which holds significant historical and cultural value for the Meitei society, are currently facing the threat of extinction. Dr. Brajakumar emphasized the urgent need for an in-depth study to determine the best methods for preserving these unique species.
Brajakumar also addressed the issue of invasive foreign species affecting the state's ecosystem. The department has begun assessing the impact of these foreign flora and fauna and is working towards documenting Manipur’s rich biodiversity, which includes species from the Himalayan and Indo-Burma biodiversity hotspots. However, many of these endemic species are now endangered.
MH Khan, Additional Chief Secretary of Forest, Environment, and Climate Change, reiterated the state government's commitment to preserving and rejuvenating natural resources and enhancing biodiversity. He highlighted the close connection between forests, environment, and climate, noting the government’s concern over deforestation.
Efforts to clean major rivers such as the Nambul, Kongba, and Imphal River have already begun, with hopes of securing substantial funding for the Imphal River from the concerned ministry soon.
Dr. H Birkumar, Chief Scientist at CSIR-NEIST, expressed concern over the extinction of many endemic species in Manipur. He stressed the need for urgent preservation efforts to maintain the region's biodiversity hotspot status.
Dr. Kh Samungou, Chairman of the Technical Committee of the State Wetlands Authority, pointed out that while poaching once significantly reduced animal and bird populations, habitat degradation and global climate change now pose the greatest threats to biodiversity. He called for collective efforts from all stakeholders and the public to conserve biodiversity effectively.
