Thousands of students gathered at the Khuman Lampak Main Stadium in Imphal East district today to celebrate Thang-Ta Day, under the theme “Thang-Ta for a Unified Manipur.” The event, marking a significant cultural occasion, saw a grand demonstration of Thang-Ta, an indigenous martial art form, with nearly 1,500 students and professional practitioners participating.
The program was jointly organized by the Kanglei Indigenous Martial Arts and Cultural Society (KIMACS) and the Thang-Ta Day Observation Committee. It showcased a vibrant display of skill and tradition, drawing attention to the deep-rooted cultural significance of Thang-Ta in Manipur’s history.
Addressing the media on the sidelines of the event, Paonam Gunindro, Vice Chancellor of Manipur Cultural University, emphasized the historical importance of Thang-Ta. He spoke about the efforts taken to revive and promote this martial art form, which has now been recognized as a subject of study at higher education levels.
Brahmacharimayum Bilki Sharma, Vice President of KIMACS, shed light on the establishment of Thang-Ta Day, which has been observed annually on November 15 since 2019. The initiative was inspired by a call from the current Rajya Sabha MP and titular king of Manipur, who recognized the importance of preserving and promoting Thang-Ta as part of the state’s cultural heritage.
Sharma also noted the growing popularity of Thang-Ta, as more parents are encouraging their children to take up this martial art. “Thang-Ta is not just a physical practice, but also a mental discipline. It helps youth maintain physical fitness while fostering mental clarity. Through this art form, we can promote a unified and prosperous Manipur,” he said.
