Manipur village reels from second militant attack in 24 hours

Fresh violence broke out in Manipur’s Mongkot Chepu village on Tuesday morning, less than a day after two farmers were injured in an earlier attack, raising concerns over the deteriorating security situation in the area.

Residents said heavily armed militants launched a coordinated assault around 7:30 am from the Litan–Sareikhong side. The attackers reportedly used mortars and automatic rifles, indicating a high level of preparedness and access to advanced weaponry.

A villager was injured during the assault after being hit by splinters from a mortar shell, highlighting the intensity of the firing. The attack triggered panic across the village, with civilians scrambling for safety.

Schoolchildren were among those affected, as gunfire and explosions rang out near educational institutions. Visuals circulating online show students sheltering inside classrooms, crouching on the floor as a precaution against the firing outside.

Eyewitnesses and a video from the Litan area have added to the concern. Locals claimed that gunshots were heard from locations close to the Litan Police Station.

The footage captures the sound of automatic weapons being fired nearby, prompting questions about how such activity occurred in close proximity to security personnel.

Residents alleged that the firing was directed towards Kuki-inhabited areas, forcing people to remain indoors amid fears of further escalation. The incident has intensified anxiety among locals and renewed scrutiny over security arrangements in the region.
