Manipur violence: Protestors in Kakching district burn effigies of PM Modi, HM Amit Shah and CM N Biren Singh

Widespread protests have gripped Manipur in the wake of the brutal killing of two students, with demonstrators condemning the government's perceived failure to address the ongoing crisis. The outrage has manifested in various forms, including rallies and effigy burning, as protestors demand justice for the victims and accountability from the authorities.

In Kakching District, protestors took to the streets in a rally that featured effigies and burnt it symbolizing the absence of Chief Minister N Biren Singh, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Home Minister Amit Shah.

The protest rally adopted a somber tone, resembling a funeral procession, with participants carrying effigies that represented the absence of accountability for the deaths.

In the valley areas of Manipur, the protests continue unabated. On September 29, a significant number of women from various locations under Khurai Constituency in Imphal East district joined together, taking to the streets with torches in hand. Prior to the street protest, a public meeting was held at the grounds of Khurai Popular High School, during which attendees resolved to combat narco-terrorism and seek justice for the two students believed to have been mercilessly killed by armed Kuki miscreants, among other demands.

Following the meeting, a public rally commenced, marching towards Khurai Lamlong. However, security forces intervened and prevented further progress. According to police sources, the protestors had not been granted permission to conduct the rally due to an existing curfew. Yet, driven by their emotions and sentiments, the protestors pressed on with the rally, leading to a standoff with security forces.

Tensions escalated as protestors refused to vacate the area, prompting the police to use tear gas and smoke bombs. In response, the protestors utilized slingshots and projectiles. The protest persisted until around 12:30 a.m., when security personnel ultimately managed to quell the agitation.
