Manipur’s 64 Rasa tradition showcased, academy vows to preserve dying art form

The Yumjao Mayum Living Art Academy showcased the traditional Rasa 64 at Ramji Prabhu Mandir in Wangkhei Ningthem Pukhri Mapal as part of its new production under the Chief Ministergi Artistesingi Tengbang (CMAT) 2025–26.

The programme began with a floral tribute to Padma Shri awardee Sougaijam Thanil, whose contribution to the arts was remembered by the organisers.

Speaking at the event, academy secretary Yumnam Bhumeshwar said the tradition of Rasa dates back to the Natya Shastra. He said eight Rasas were recognised in earlier times, with Shanta Rasa later taking the number to nine.

According to Bhumeshwar, the tradition of Rasa 64 was introduced during the reign of Maharaj Chandrakirti, influenced by the Gaudiya Vaishnavite tradition associated with Gouranga Mahaprabhu.

He expressed concern over the gradual decline of the 64 Rasa tradition, saying fewer people are now practising and preserving the traditional art form.

The initiative, he said, was aimed at reviving and safeguarding the cultural heritage of Manipur and ensuring that the tradition is passed on to future generations.

The academy said it would continue organising similar programmes in the coming years to promote, preserve and revive traditional Rasa practices in the state.

The programme was attended by scholars, artistes, gurus and others associated with Manipur’s art and cultural traditions..
