Manipur's Khurai residents stage 24-hour shutdown, demand justice for Paonam Dhaneshwar

Normal life was affected in parts of Khurai in Manipur’s Imphal East district on October 13 as residents observed a 24-hour total shutdown called by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) on the Unnatural Death of Paonam Dhaneshwar, demanding accountability in connection with his death.

Protesters from various parts of the Khurai Assembly constituency took to the streets and blocked roads, disrupting the movement of vehicles and commuters.

According to a protester, Dhaneshwar, a resident of Sajor Leikai in Khurai Kongpal, allegedly died by suicide on September 30. He had appeared before the Cyber Crime Police Station on September 29 in connection with a complaint over alleged obscene and derogatory remarks posted against a woman elected representative.

The protester alleged that despite the legal proceedings initiated in connection with the matter, Dhaneshwar continued to face online trolling and abusive comments. She claimed that the alleged harassment on social media added to the circumstances surrounding his death.

The deceased’s family has lodged a complaint at Porompat Police Station, alleging criminal intimidation, harassment and conspiracy. The protester claimed that no action had been taken so far and demanded that the authorities investigate the allegations and hold those responsible accountable.

“We admit that the deceased used derogatory remarks against one of the woman elected representatives, and that was wrong. However, continuously harassing him on social media while the legal process was underway was also unacceptable,” the protester said.

She further demanded action against those allegedly involved in online harassment, arguing that the case should be investigated beyond the original complaint against Dhaneshwar.

“Just to express their views and comments, one person has lost his life,” she said, calling for accountability in the case.

The shutdown is aimed at pressing the authorities to address the family’s allegations and take appropriate action. The claims of online harassment and conspiracy remain allegations and require investigation.
