Rajkumari Lanchenbi Chanu, who became India's first-ever Wushu medallist at the 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, has said she was aiming for a gold or silver medal but had to settle for bronze after making a few mistakes during her competition.
Speaking after her achievement, Lanchenbi said she was excited to win the bronze medal and dedicated the achievement to her coaches and family, crediting them for their constant motivation and support.
"I am very excited because I won a bronze medal at the first Wushu Youth Olympic Games in 2026. I want to dedicate this to my coaches and my family because they give me a lot of motivation and support," she said.
The young athlete admitted that she had initially expected to finish higher on the podium but felt that some mistakes during her performance affected her final result.
"I thought I would win the gold or silver. I made some mistakes, which is why I got the bronze medal. Next time, I will do my best and bring home the gold medal," she said.
Lanchenbi also spoke about her sporting journey, revealing that she initially trained in gymnastics before taking up Wushu in 2021.
She began gymnastics in 2017 and later transitioned to Wushu, a Chinese martial art that combines elements of combat techniques and athletic performance.
Looking ahead, the young athlete said she would work towards improving her performance and winning gold in her next international competition.
