Mob torches NSCN-IM office in Manipur's Ukhrul after deadly ambush in Kamjong
Tension escalated in Manipur’s Ukhrul district on Sunday, March 29 after an irate mob set fire to the Wung Tangkhul Region office of the National Socialist Council of Nagalim-Isak-Muivah (NSCN-IM), following the killing of four cadres belonging to the NSCN Eastern Flank in neighbouring Kamjong district.
According to local sources, the mob targeted the NSCN-IM’s Wung Region headquarters in Ukhrul, alleging the group’s involvement in the ambush that led to the deaths. The incident has heightened tensions in the region, with security concerns mounting in both Ukhrul and Kamjong districts.
The violence follows an ambush that took place on Saturday evening at Hongbei village junction in Kamjong district. In a statement, the NSCN Eastern Flank said four of its cadres were killed in the attack, which it alleged was carried out by individuals led by one 2nd Lieutenant Mathotmi of Shihai Khunou village between 8:30 pm and 9:00 pm on March 26.
The statement said the cadres had earlier travelled to Kasom Khullen via Hongbei village around 4:30 pm on official duty to monitor timber movement and other business activities along the Indo-Myanmar border. While returning, they were reportedly intercepted at Hongbei village junction by an armed group.
The NSCN Eastern Flank alleged that the group, including individuals identified as 2nd Lieutenant Mathotmi and 2nd Lieutenant Starling, opened fire on its cadres following an order to shoot. Four cadres were killed on the spot, while two others managed to escape.
Meanwhile, the NSCN-IM has denied any involvement in the ambush. In an official statement, the group said it was “shocked and grief-stricken” by the incident and clarified that no directive had been issued from its general headquarters to engage in offensive action against any faction.
The statement added that an internal investigation is underway to ascertain the facts surrounding the incident. It further stated that those found responsible would be dealt with in accordance with the group’s rules and regulations. The organisation also appealed to the public to remain calm and not be influenced by unverified information circulating on social media.
Security agencies are closely monitoring the situation as tensions remain high in the area.
