Naga groups demand action over Langka Naga attack, allege KNF-P involvement

Naga civil society groups on Friday, August 14, demanded immediate action against those responsible for the killing of two civilians and injuries to two others in an ambush at Langka Naga village in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district, alleging the involvement of a KNF-P group.

The attack took place around 7.30 am when farmers were working in paddy fields, according to sources. More than 40 armed men carrying sophisticated weapons allegedly attacked the farmers.
 

The deceased were identified as W Chawang, 34, and Kawidinang Abonmai, 55. Both sustained gunshot wounds and died at the spot.
 

The injured, identified as M Abonmai, 52, and N Prinmai, 50, suffered serious bullet injuries. They were airlifted by the Indian Army from Haochong and brought to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Imphal for treatment.
 

Addressing reporters at the RIMS complex, Foothill Naga Coordinating Committee convenor Ng Akhui condemned the attack and urged the government to take immediate action against those involved.
 

Akhui, citing eyewitness accounts, alleged that more than 50 armed Kuki men wearing combat uniforms and carrying sophisticated weapons were involved in the attack.
 

He questioned how an armed group under the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement could allegedly move around with weapons and attack civilians. He also questioned the security arrangements in the area, pointing out that an Army camp was located near the village.
 

“How can a KNF group which is in SoO agreement roam freely with weapon and attack innocent civilians? There is also one army camp near the village. Where have all the forces gone?” he asked.
 

Akhui said Naga groups had repeatedly demanded protection for civilians from armed groups and warned that continued attacks could lead to a “civil war-like situation” in the coming days.
 

He also referred to the killing of six Naga men who were allegedly abducted from Leilon Vaiphei village in Kangpokpi district, saying their families were still waiting for justice.
 

“Despite this, another deadly attack on Naga civilians is very unfortunate,” he said.
 

The latest attack has triggered fresh tension in the area, with Naga civil society groups demanding accountability and stronger security measures to protect civilians.
