New Manipur CM Yumnam Khemchand Singh vows to 'justify the confidence' of Modi, Shah
Newly sworn-in Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on February 4 said he would work to justify the confidence shown in him by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, while calling for collective efforts to restore peace in Manipur.
Speaking to reporters at Lok Bhavan after taking oath, Singh said the state is home to 36 communities that have collectively sustained Manipur over the years. “Our hope now is for all to help in bringing a peaceful atmosphere,” he said.
Referring to the central leadership, Singh said, “Modi and Shah have placed great faith in me, and I want to take that faith forward,” adding that his government would focus on stability and cooperation among communities.
On the appointment of two deputy chief ministers—one from the Naga community and one from the Kuki community—Singh said Manipur is inhabited by various ethnic groups, and participation from all communities in running the government is essential.
Meanwhile, newly appointed deputy chief minister L Dikho said the objective of the new government was to bring lasting peace to the state. “As a first step, we will reach out to the people and work with commitment and transparency,” he said, describing inclusiveness as “the new mantra of the government”.
Asked about possible action against armed groups that have issued threats to Kuki legislators over their participation in government formation, Dikho replied, “Why not?”
Responding to questions on Nemcha Kipgen taking oath through virtual mode, Singh said that her decision to participate, even virtually, reflected her willingness to be part of the process. He acknowledged that there may be opposition but said such issues would be resolved over time. “It takes time to address problems and needs a gradual process,” he said.
Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla administered the oath of office and secrecy to the 62-year-old Singh at Lok Bhavan on Wednesday evening. Kipgen and Dikho were sworn in as deputy chief ministers, while BJP’s Govindas Konthoujam and NPP’s K Loken Singh took oath as ministers.
The ceremony was held hours after the President’s Rule in Manipur was revoked.
