No permanent construction on Lumpongdeng Island, assures Meghalaya CM
Conrad K Sangma has sought to allay public concerns over proposed activities at Lumpongdeng Island, clarifying that no permanent construction will be allowed on the ecologically sensitive site.
In a public statement, the Chief Minister said the agreement signed between the government and the tourism department explicitly prohibits any permanent structures on the island. He dismissed apprehensions that the island would be converted into a concrete setup as “completely wrong.”
Sangma explained that only temporary arrangements—such as shamianas, pandals, and stalls—will be permitted for short durations during specific events. These structures, he said, will be dismantled within a week to ten days after the programme concludes, ensuring minimal environmental impact.
He further clarified that while certain permissions under forest regulations may allow limited activity, the state government has taken a firm position to restrict any form of permanent construction. The move, he said, is aimed at preserving the island’s natural ecosystem, including its flora and fauna.
Addressing concerns about possible misinformation, Sangma urged the public not to be misled by claims suggesting large-scale development on the island. He reiterated that the government remains committed to balancing tourism promotion with environmental protection.
The clarification comes amid growing public debate over conservation and sustainable tourism in Meghalaya.
