President Murmu pledges government support for conflict-hit Manipur during maiden visit

President Droupadi Murmu has assured the people of Manipur that addressing their concerns remains the government's "highest priority" as she inaugurated development projects worth Rs 1,387 crore during her first visit to the state since assuming office.

 

Speaking at a civic reception at City Convention Centre, the President acknowledged the suffering caused by the ongoing violence that has gripped Manipur for 17 months. "I am aware of the pain of people of Manipur who have gone through for the unfortunate violence. I want to assure that taking care of the concerns of the people of Manipur is the highest priority for us. My government stands with every affected family," she said.

 

The President inaugurated 12 projects valued at Rs 207 crore and laid foundation stones for 14 projects amounting to Rs 1,180 crore during her two-day visit. The initiatives span healthcare, sports, electricity, agriculture and rural development sectors.

 

Murmu emphasised the central government's commitment to the state's recovery. "Indian government is fully committed to strengthening harmony, ensuring security for Manipur in its journey towards stability and prosperity. The government is ensure of promoting growth in each and every part of the state," she stated.

 

The visit marks a significant political engagement, coming three months after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's trip to the troubled state. High-ranking officials, MLAs and police personnel attended the reception programme.

 

Praising Manipur's contributions to national life, the President described it as a "land of resilience, courage and extraordinary culture", highlighting achievements in sports, arts and public service. She made particular reference to the historic Nupi Lal uprising against British colonial policies, noting that the women of Manipur "inspire every India".

 

Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla welcomed the President's visit as reflecting the "close bond between the state and the highest office of the republic". He acknowledged the unprecedented challenges facing Manipur whilst praising residents for demonstrating "remarkable resilience, patience and unity".

 

The Governor assured that authorities are focused on "healing, reconciliation, confidence building so every citizen lives with dignity and security and renewed hope for the future".

 

President Murmu arrived at Imphal International Airport at approximately 1pm and attended a polo event at Mapal Kangjeibung organised by the Youth Affairs and Sports Department before the civic reception. She is scheduled to meet internally displaced persons during her visit and will travel to the Senapati district on the second day.

 

The President called on people from hill and valley communities to "continue to remain together with renewed harmony to achieve the great height of happiness and prosperity".
