Shutdown in Manipur's Kangpokpi after killing of two village volunteers

Normal life came to a standstill in parts of Kangpokpi district on April 25, as a 10-hour shutdown was observed following the killing of two village volunteers in Mulam.

The shutdown, called by the Committee on Tribal Unity, was observed from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. to honour the deceased, highlighting the tense situation in the region a day after the incident.

Shops and business establishments remained closed, while educational and private institutions also suspended operations during the shutdown. Vehicular movement, however, was largely unaffected.

The bodies of the two volunteers are scheduled to be laid to rest at the Martyrs’ Cemetery in Phaijang later in the day. The burial programme, set to begin at 12 noon, is expected to witness a large turnout.

The killings in Mulam have raised fresh concerns over security and stability in the area, prompting authorities to maintain a close watch on the situation.
