Tension erupts in Manipur's Churachandpur as protests break out against ‘Popular Government’

Churachandpur district in Manipur witnessed heightened tension on Thursday, February 5 as protests erupted in the Tuibong area, with demonstrators openly opposing the formation of the newly installed “popular government.” The situation remained volatile throughout the day, prompting heavy deployment of security forces to prevent further escalation.

According to sources, unrest began early in the morning, triggered by widespread anger among protesters over Kuki MLAs extending support to the popular government. Demonstrators accused the elected representatives of defying community sentiment, particularly in the context of the demand for a separate administrative arrangement.

Protesters reportedly maintained a firm stance, declaring that they would not support the popular government until their demand for separate administration is fulfilled. Tensions intensified after the popular government was formed in the presence of Kuki MLAs, including Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen, along with MLAs L.M. Khaute and Ngursanglur Sanate. The move was perceived by protesters as a betrayal of community aspirations.

The agitation took a dramatic turn when two protesters allegedly attempted self-immolation as a mark of protest. However, timely intervention by police personnel prevented the incident from turning fatal. The protest further escalated around 6 pm, with sporadic scuffles reported despite the deployment of a large number of security personnel.

While authorities managed to prevent major casualties, sources confirmed that several protesters sustained injuries during the clashes. As of the latest reports, the situation remains tense, with security forces continuing efforts to restore complete control in the area.

It may be recalled that sections of the Kuki community had earlier issued warnings to Kuki MLAs against supporting the popular government if it came into existence. Monday’s developments underline the deepening political and social fault lines in the region amid an already fragile security situation.
