Tension escalates in Manipur’s Ukhrul over Assam Rifles outpost, 20 injured in clashes

Tension escalated in Manipur's Ukhrul district after protests against the establishment of a temporary Assam Rifles outpost at New Heaven turned violent, leaving at least 20 people injured, according to local sources.

The protests were triggered by allegations that the Assam Rifles had set up a temporary outpost at New Heaven, an area under the jurisdiction of Shokvao village, without obtaining approval from the village authority. Community leaders and village representatives have reportedly termed the outpost “unauthorised” and had repeatedly appealed for its removal.

Sources stated that despite several representations made by the village authority and local leaders, no action had been taken to vacate the site, leading to growing resentment among residents.

The confrontation between security personnel and protesters reportedly occurred at two locations in Ukhrul district — New Heaven under Shokvao village and Finch Corner under Shangshak village. A large number of villagers, including women torch-bearers, participated in the demonstrations demanding the withdrawal of the outpost.

According to local accounts, the situation deteriorated when security personnel attempted to disperse the protesters. Videos widely circulated on social media purportedly show Assam Rifles personnel lathi-charging women demonstrators. The videos also allegedly depict the firing of several rounds during the confrontation, although the circumstances surrounding the incident could not be independently verified.

As tensions mounted, the protest turned violent, prompting security forces to use tear gas to control the crowd, sources said. At least 20 individuals sustained injuries during the clashes and were subsequently admitted to Ukhrul District Hospital for treatment.

The incident has sparked widespread condemnation among local residents, with villagers continuing to demand the immediate removal of the temporary outpost. The situation in the area remains tense, with authorities closely monitoring developments.

No official statement from the Assam Rifles was available at the time of filing this report.
