Two Assam Rifles personnel killed after alleged ambush on convoy in Manipur's Ukhrul district
Two personnel of the Assam Rifles were killed after unidentified armed men allegedly ambushed a convoy of the 40 Assam Rifles near Nungshang Kong in Manipur's Ukhrul district on July 6, according to sources.
The alleged ambush reportedly took place while the convoy was passing through the area. The two personnel sustained critical injuries in the attack.
Sources said efforts were initially made to shift the injured personnel to Imphal for advanced medical treatment. However, as their condition deteriorated, they were taken to the Assam Rifles camp at Sangshak in Ukhrul district, where they later succumbed to their injuries.
Security forces have launched a search operation in the area to trace those responsible for the attack. The identity of the assailants and the motive behind the alleged ambush were not immediately known.
Condemning the incident, Manipur Home Minister K. Govindas Singh said he was deeply saddened by the reported attack on the 40 Assam Rifles convoy.
"Such incidents only disrupt the peace and harmony that we all aspire to uphold. My thoughts and prayers are with the injured personnel, and I wish them a speedy and complete recovery," he said in a social media post before the deaths of the two personnel were confirmed.
The Home Minister said he was confident that the security forces would take all necessary measures to bring those responsible to justice in accordance with the law. He also appealed to the people to remain united in their commitment to peace, security and the well-being of Manipur.
