Ukhrul on edge as villagers seek release of four farmers allegedly detained by Assam Rifles

Tension gripped Manipur's Ukhrul district on July 25 after residents of Hungpung village alleged that four farmers were illegally abducted by Assam Rifles personnel while returning from their paddy fields, prompting protests and a blockade on National Highway-202.

According to local sources, the incident occurred around 5 pm near the cement factory in Hungpung village when the four men were allegedly detained by Assam Rifles personnel without provocation.

Following reports that the Assam Rifles convoy was heading towards Litan, a large number of villagers gathered at S. Laho (Leingangching) and blocked NH-202, intercepting military vehicles and demanding the immediate release of the four civilians.

The situation escalated after a confrontation between protesters and security personnel. According to local sources, Assam Rifles personnel fired tear gas shells to disperse the crowd. The sources also alleged that live rounds were fired, triggering further outrage among villagers, who allegedly overturned security vehicles during the unrest.

The Hungpung Village Administrative Council has lodged a formal complaint with the Ukhrul district police, alleging the illegal abduction of four innocent civilians and seeking their immediate rescue and release.

The complaint claimed that the four men were attending their paddy fields when they were taken into custody despite displaying no suspicious behaviour or offering any provocation.

The village council has urged the police to conduct a thorough inquiry into the incident and ensure the immediate release of the four men.
