Villagers, IDPs step in to repair neglected Khuga Dam road in Manipur's Churachandpur, seek government support
Residents and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Churachandpur district of Manipur have undertaken a community-led initiative to repair the long-neglected Khuga Dam approach road, highlighting persistent infrastructure gaps and delayed government intervention in the region.
The effort, coordinated by a local body named the Khuga Dam Approach Road Maintenance Committee, has brought together villagers from three settlements along with IDPs residing near the Khuga Dam area.
According to residents, the road has remained largely unattended for nearly three decades, affecting daily movement and access to essential services. The condition of the road worsens seasonally, turning muddy and nearly impassable during the monsoon, while generating dust and safety hazards during the summer months.
Mercy, a resident involved in the initiative, said the deteriorating road conditions have significantly disrupted the lives of students, farmers and daily commuters. She noted that the current repair work includes leveling the surface and laying river stones to improve accessibility. However, the materials and machinery used for the work have been procured on credit, with payments still pending.
She appealed to the public for financial and logistical support, describing the ongoing repairs as a temporary measure. Mercy also urged the government and relevant departments to implement a long-term solution to ensure durable road connectivity in the area.
Residents pointed out that the presence of newly settled IDPs has increased the urgency for reliable infrastructure. The ongoing repair marks the third phase of community-driven work, following the reconstruction of a bridge connecting Sehken village and a subsequent round of road repairs completed last year.
Despite repeated appeals to local legislators, villagers said no concrete action has been taken so far. However, they acknowledged a positive response from the district administration, particularly the Deputy Commissioner of Churachandpur, and expressed cautious optimism regarding possible official support.
Residents have reiterated their demand for sustained government intervention and proper road infrastructure, while affirming their commitment to continue maintenance efforts until formal assistance is extended.
