Citizenship Amendment Bill brought Northeast together: Conrad K Sangma

Guwahati, March 29, 2019:

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma while on the campaign trail for the National People’s Party (NPP) on Friday again brought out the issue of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016. Sangma addressed two rallies held at Churachandpur and Sugnu and at the latter venue he stressed the importance of the Northeast uniting yet again.

“Why did Delhi even dare to think they can take the Northeast for granted? It was because they knew if there is one problem in Manipur, we will handle it, if there is one problem in Meghalaya, we will handle it, there is a problem in Mizoram, we will handle it”, he said.

Sangma also stated that the unity of the Northeastern people led to the demise of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. “This issue of Citizenship (

Amendment) Bill brought us together. You found all the political parties of the Northeast came together and when we came together, Delhi was forced to listen to us and stop the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. What if a political platform brings us together?”

During his speech, Sangma further reiterated the need to bring the entire Northeast under one political umbrella. “What if a political platform brings us together? And if there is a political platform that brings us together, Delhi will never take us lightly.”

Sangma also said that the voices of the Northeastern tribes would be heard under an NPP leadership.

Sangma and the NPP party have made the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill their primary poll issue. It may be mentioned that the NPP will contest elections in all Northeastern states in India.
