Five coal-laden pick up trucks were seized from the West Khasi Hills by Meghalaya Police.
The police said that the vehicles were of Assam registration and were caught based on a specific information. The drivers of the vehicles managed to escape before the police could reach them.
The police however, have initiated an investigation on the issue.
A police official said that it is very shocking to see coal being transported on pick up trucks as earlier, the smugglers used heavy trucks to transport illegally extracted coal. “But, now it seems to be that the coal mafias have found a new way of transporting coal”, the official added.
