The Meghalaya Police have arrested a coal merchant for allegedly being involved in the murder attempt of social activist Agnes Kharshiing and her aide from LGBI Airport on Friday.
The police said that they have arrested the coal merchant, Showmewell B Kyndait based on intelligence input while he was attempting to fly to New Delhi so that he could evade police arrest.
Kyndait after being interrogated by the Khliehriat police “confessed” that he was one of those attackers.
It may be mentioned that so far the police have arrested seven people in connection with the case and further investigations are still on.
Agnes Kharshiing along with two other people were attacked and severely injured by suspected coal mafias in East Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya on November 8.
According to sources, Agnes was attacked by a group of people along with her driver and accomplice Anita Narzary. She received severe injuries on her head while the rest escaped with minor injuries.
Kharshing was attacked when she went to East Jaintia Hills after receiving information about coal mining going on in the place and a few trucks being seized by the police.
On reaching the spot, Kharshing started taking pictures of the location, when a group of people, suspected to be linked with coal mafias attacked her.
