In a major boost to the Congress party ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, a large number of leaders along with their supporters joined Congress at Resubelpara on Saturday in what is being seen as a move by the Congress before it tackles the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) in Tura and Shillong.
The joining ceremony was organized in presence of Senior Congress legislator and the Chairman of Campaign committee for Tura Parliamentary seat Zenith Sangma. Speaking at the function, Sangma lambasted chief minister Conrad Sangma for misleading people and making false promises to people which after one year of MDA Government could not fulfill.
Touching the crucial Citizenship Amendment Bill issue, Zenith questioned the gradual softening of the stand by the NPP leader. "Conrad had threatened to sever ties with BJP if CAB is passed in the Parliament. Although in Rajya Sabha BJP could not pass it because of not having numbers, still BJP President Amit Shah said in Assam that the CAB will be passed if BJP is voted to power, then why Conrad continues to be in alliance with BJP? The intent is clear, so why is Conrad still with the BJP? It is because, without BJP, they (the NPP) cannot survive," Zenith said.
In the mass joining programme, Priyam Sangma (ex NCP MLA candidate Kharkutta), Dr. Tweel K Marak (ex NCP MLA candidate Resubelpara), Starline Momin (ex MLA candidate, independent, Resubelpara) and Tengrak Marak (ex MLA candidate Resubelpara) along with their supporters joined Congress.
At a time when Meghalaya too gears up for 'Battle for Ballot', this joining boosts the morale of the Mukul Sangma led party who will contest against the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA).
