In a major development, the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council has decided to recall the Khasi Hills Autonomous District (Khasi Social Custom of Lineage) (First and Second Amendment) Bills. This was confirmed by Khasi Hill Autonomous District Council (KHADC) Chief Executive Member (CEM) HS Shylla here.
The CEM explained that there was a loophole in the First Amendment Bill as it mentioned the appointment and powers of Rangbah Kur (headman) in the same Lineage Act of 1997, but their powers and functions should be clearly defined by another Act.
Similarly, contradictory clauses in the Second Amendment Bill passed recently would be deleted, he added.
The KHADC chief dismissed the charges that the Bill was passed in haste as the issue of mixed marriage was discussed prior to 1925.
