SHILLONG: The Khasi Students' Union (KSU) in Meghalaya is now strictly demanding the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the Northeast Indian state. The influential students' body from Meghalaya, which was recently in the news for protests against the Bengali populace, has also asked the Government to exempt the state from the purview of the Indo-Nepal Friendship Treaty of 1950.

The student body, in its missive, stated that the implementation of the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation (BEFR) 1873 or the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the State "is an effective mechanism to combat and regulate the entry of outsiders into states where the indigenous populations are microscopic in population."
Pointing out the recently, the state of Manipur was endowed with the ILP, it also stated that only 3 States in the Northeast Indian region -- Assam, Meghalaya, and Tripura -- are bereft of the ILP in the state.

"Due to excessive migration from outside the country and certain other states since 1971, there develop serious ramifications within the state whereby there is a contestation in all aspects between the indigenous tribal communities and the migrant communities," it further pointed out.
Urging the Government to implement the ILP in the state, the KSU stated that it would "promote the survival, progress, and security of the ethnic indigenous tribes of the state and it would also ensure peacce and tranquility amongst the peace-loving citizens of the state."
The Khasi students' body further called upon the Prime Minister's office to repeal the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Act. "The Act which seeks to grant citizenship to all migrants belonging to other faiths will have a detrimental effect on the fragile demographic balance of the state."
