Shillong, May 13, 2019:

Khasi Students' Union (KSU) members have locked up the office chamber of the Director of NEIGRIHMS following the embarrassing stand-off in the institute which has also resulted in deats.

The student body has also demanded the removal of the Head of Department of the institute D M Thapa in light of the recent controversies. Further, they are protesting the stand-off between the NEIGRIHMS Cardiology Department and the administration.

Hundreds of Khasi Student's Members members led by its president Lambokstarwell Marngar and general secretary Donald V Thabah stromed into the hospital and shut down the office of the director holding him responsible for the ongoing disturbance in NEIGRIHMS.

The Khasi Students' Union also held the director responsible for the death of a patient allegedly due to non-availability of equipment in the cardiology department to treat her.

This incident happened after a 52-year-old lady hailing from Mawphlang died due to the ongoing stalemate in the medical institute as she could not be operated as per schedule.

The KSU has also promised to write to the Union Minister of Health with a appeal to end the stand-off.

North East’s reputed medical institution North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) is undergoing turmoil as the head of the cardiology department Animesh Mishra is allegedly at loggerheads with the Director of the prestigious institute, DM Thappa.

In a statement, Public relation officer, Dr. KK Pandita stated that the head of cardiology department, Dr. Animesh Mishra, also refused to cooperate with the administration regarding the issue and to make treatment to poorer patients affordable.

The statement further stated “Two complaints from the Prime Minister’s Office to the Union ministry of health and family welfare, forwarded to the institute, said cardiology patients have to purchase expensive stents from local vendors to get treatment at NEIGRIHMS.”

To overcome the situation, a committee was formed by the director of NEIGRIHMS to get the requirements from various departments so that the stents/pacemakers and others could be made available through revolving fund or Amrit pharmacy. However, the committee could not finalize the list as Mishra did not co-operation.
